Families of athletes are a continual source of support to them and to the movement. Family members have witnessed the life-changing impact of Special Olympics on the athletes, families, and volunteers. The Illinois Knights of Columbus are the sponsors of the Family Plaza and the bronze statue. The Family Wall itself honors the importance of families to the spirit of Special Olympics. Space on the wall is reserved for any relative of an athlete. Recognition can also be made "In Memory Of" a family member.

The bronze statue titled "The First Ribbon" by artist Rosie Sandifer was installed in the Family Plaza in 2007 with key members of the Knights of Columbus present for the unveiling.
