A Lasting Tribute to An Enduring Spirit
Since 1968, Special Olympics Illinois has impacted the lives of
not only athletes, but the athletes' families and volunteers as
well. There are over 21,000 athletes training and competing
today. They are supported by family members and more than 25,000
volunteers who help the program run smoothly.
Athlete achievement is the greatest tribute to the Special Olympics
movement. A physical tribute to their courage and determination
is deserved. Special Olympics Illinois has designed a one-of-a-kind
Tribute Park to recognize the athletes and all the people who make
Special Olympics Illinois a reality.
Funding Future Generations
Your contributions will help to pay for Tribute Park construction
costs so that operating funds will not be diverted from the program.
This physical tribute will not only honor those involved today and
in the past, but will also help generate funds for future generations
of athletes.
Adjacent to Headquarters
The beautifully landscaped Tribute Park is located at 605 E. Willow Street in Normal, Illinois, next to the state headquarters. The Tribute Park is a destination point for Special Olympics athletes and supporters who come for training or state competitions in Bloomington-Normal.
Dedicated in 2005
The Tribute Park was dedicated on June 17, 2005 with several hundred athletes and supporters attending along with Special Olympics Inc. Chairman Tim Shriver and the Justice Anne M. Burke, who organized the very first Special Olympics games at Soldier Field in 1968 when on staff at the Chicago Park District.
Honoring All Who Participate
The park pays tribute to the entire Special Olympics Illinois family
of yesterday, today and tomorrow while providing everyone with the
opportunity to support the project.
Athletes are honored through a commissioned life-size
bronze statue by Rosie Sandifer standing before a specially designed black granite
wall with waterfall in the Athletes' Celebration Plaza. Throughout
the park, bricks will be available for athletes past and present
to be individually recognized by name and hometown with a minimum
contribution of $100.
Agencies can choose to be part of the Team Walk through
granite squares that name the agency, team or mascot, and town.
These squares will be interspersed with educational tablets that
describe the history and scope of the program and that lead to the
athlete statue.
Families - Each relative of athletes past and present can
choose from three different levels of recognition on the Family
Wall where their name is etched in stone along with their relationship
to a particular athlete. A statue recognizing Special Olympics families by artist Rosie Sandifer was dedicated in 2007.
The Illinois Knights of Columbus are the sponsors of the Family Plaza and the bronze statue.
Volunteers - The Volunteer Wall is for all volunteers who
wish to support the park or for anyone who wishes to honor a volunteer
who has given their time and talents at state or area events. They
can choose from three levels of recognition on the Volunteer Wall.
The volunteer's name, type of involvement and hometown are included.
Donors - Whether individuals, corporations or organizations,
donors can be recognized at several different levels on the Donor
Wall. In addition to three levels of recognition by Friends of the
Park, there are also sections on the wall for the Olympus Society
(recognition of gifts left to Special Olympics Illinois from estates)
and major donors (gifts of $10,000 or more to support the park or
the fund for future generations).
