District/Sectional Events

The athletes of Special Olympics Illinois first compete at the local level events.  Depending on the sport, individuals or teams may participate in district or sectional level competition.  Gold medal winners from district or sectional competition are then eligible for state level competition in that particular sport.

Sports requiring a gold medal at district level competition for advancement to state are:

• Aquatics
• Basketball (Senior Male and Young Adult team divisions)
• Bocce (Traditional and Unified divisions)
• Cross Country Skiing
• Gymnastics
• Snowshoe
• Softball (Traditional and Tee Ball team divisions)

Sports requiring a gold medal at sectional level competition for advancement to state are:

• Bowling
• Ramp Bowling
